The rich soil of the Delta presents Glendora with a wonderful opportunity to develop a new organic gardening cottage industry. Nurtured by the waters of the Tallahatchie River & the Black Bayou, Glendora ‘s location claims some of the most fertile land in the region. The goals of this particular cottage industry initiative are to locally generate goods and products to promote economic stability and entrepreneurship.
The first phase of this development will begin with the construction of a low-cost greenhouse for starter plants, and to work with Glendora families, specifically the youth of the community, who will specialize in growing a wide variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers & herbs that can be packaged and sold at regional farmers’ markets. A second phase of this industry will include a canning, storage, & distribution program to expand the market to wider area of consumers, especially at cultural festivals celebrating the Delta Blues.
In addition to working with families on new ways to generate income, Gardens of Glendora will also serve as the centerpiece of a community-wide beautification campaign. Starter trees, bushes & flowers from the greenhouse will eventually line the streets, front porches & new parks of a revitalized Glendora community.
